Course Name:ICETRAIN Course for Deck Officers
Last Entering Date:31-DEC-10
Additional Information:

Courses are arranged upon request.

A three-day course aimed at deck officers who need training for operation in polar areas or in the Baltic Sea during winter time. The course consists of 13 modules that are falling under four main subjects as follows: 1) Introduction to ice operation, 2) Navigation and shiphandling, 3) Cargo handling and deck machinery and 4) Safety, emergency and survival. The training includes navigation simulator exercises demonstrating the characteristics of different operational modes during a typical passage from open sea through ice infested fairways to the port.

Subject to an optional arrangement the course can be supplemented with an onboard training module consisting of demonstration and observation of icebreaker operations onboard a Finstaship icebreaker.

We also provide optional hypothermia and survival training –modules in Meriturva Survival Training Unit, where your crew can really deepen their understanding of effects of cold to the human behavior and body.

An excursion to Aker Arctic Technology Inc. Test Basin & Laboratory facilities can also be added to course program according to client’s needs. During this excursion participants will visit ice basin facilities, and possibly view ship-model testing.

Upon completing the course and the end exam successfully, each trainee is awarded an Ice Navigation Certificate by Germanischer Lloyd AG.

Organizer:Admiral Makarov State Maritime
Course Name:Ice Navigation
Last Entering Date:31-DEC-10
Additional Information:

Courses are arranged upon request!

Makarov Training Centre of Admiral Makarov Academy offers ice navigation training since 2001 using the most advanced simulation complex, approved by the Maritime Administration of the Russian Federation and Det Norske Veritas, including:

  • Full-mission bridge simulator;
  • Full-mission ECR simulator and Steering compartment simulator;
  • Ice Model, reflecting interaction of different types of ice with the ship's hull and visualization of ice environment;
  • Vast library of ship's mathematic models and port areas with approaches.

Professional Ice Navigation training for deck officers, pilots, winter navigation superintendants, pilots and VTS operators includes well-proven ice navigation theory and simulator training under supervision of experienced Makarov’s instructors with ice breakers masters, ice pilots and representative of St Petersburg Ice Operation headquarters. Advanced ice simulation model with full-mission navigating bridge coupled with the engine room gives unprecedented feeling of reality. The following topics are discussed within the course:

  • Navigational characteristic of sea ice, ice charts
  • Ship preparation for ice navigation, safe working practice during ice navigation.
  • Communications, tactic of unassisted passage of tanker in ice.
  • Mutual maneuvering of a ship and the ice breaker, a ship and tugs in the ice.
  • Mooring with tug assistance in different ice conditions.
  • Advanced ice navigation technique

Advanced Ice Navigation training in addition to the content of professional training this one includes visit to Ice Model Test Basin. This course includes additional useful information on:

  • Interaction of ship’s hull with ice
  • CPP, FPP and diesel-electric propulsion system in ice operation
  • Introduction to azimuthing propulsion systems (Azipod, Aquamaster)
  • Navigation of different types of ships in channels, hummocks and ridged ice conditions

The lectures within this course are supported by demonstration of the interaction of ship model with the ice in the ice model test basin.

Practical Ice Navigation Training in addition to the content of professional training includes practical training on board the ice class vessel. This course includes trip on board in ice conditions and adds practical skills and more information on ice navigation such as:

  • Ice Breaker rules and signaling
  • Navigation with Ice Breakers in Convoy
  • Safe working mooring practice in cold weather

Navigation and use of propulsion in variable ice field and packed ice will be demonstrated on board (entering ice, use of radar and search light for ice edge detection, selecting route through the ice, turning, backing, following in the lead).

Crew Resource Management in Ice Navigation is an advanced training with involvement of both deck officers and engineers in one team working in ice conditions. This advanced type of ice training gives unique experience of team work in difficult ice conditions enabling crews to obtain ice teamwork experience. Virtual ship simulator consisting of full-mission navigating bridge and engine room simulator will be used for the training. Chief Engineers with ice experience will supervise ER training, while pilots and IB masters will complement deck officers training. Emergency scenarios such as rudder jamming, engine overheating and block-out will add some extra benefits to the practical value of the course.
