    The ice is drifting eastward.

     

    In the northern Bay of Bothnia there is 40–85 cm thick fast ice in the archipelago. Farther out, 30–60 cm thick, heavily ridged, consolidated drift ice. North of Falkens grund there are wide leads.

     

    In the central and southern Bay of Bothnia 35–55 cm thick fast ice in the archipelago. Father out, there is 20–50 cm thick, rafted and in places ridged compact drift ice. A lead has opened off the Swedish coast.

     

    In the Quark there is lead on the Swedish side. South of Nordvalen there is 15–40 cm thick, rafted very close ice. Farther south, new ice and 10–35 cm thick, ridged very close ice. From Vaasa to Norra Gloppsten, 35–55 cm thick fast ice.

     

    In the Sea of Bothnia, 25–50 cm thick fast ice in the archipelago. Off the fast ice edge, there is a narrow zone of 10–25 cm thick very close ice. Farther out, new ice and 5–20 cm thick level ice approximately to the central line of the Sea of Bothnia. Farther west 10–35 cm thick, very close ice and level ice. Leads have opened off the Swedish coast.

     

    In the Sea of Åland there is 10–30 cm thick, very close ice. West of lighthouse Märket there is an approximately 5 nautical miles wide lead.

     

    In the Archipelago Sea, 25–50 cm thick fast ice in the inner archipelago. In the outer archipelago, 15–30 cm thick level ice and consolidated drift ice to Utö. Farther out, new ice.

     

    In the northern Baltic Sea there is new ice and 5–30 cm thick drift ice approximately to the line Almagrundet  – 25 nautical miles north-east of Gotska Sandön – Ristna. The ice concentration varies from very open to very close.

     

    In the western part of the Gulf of Finland, 20–50 cm and thick fast ice in the archipelago. Off the fast ice there is mainly new ice. Off Porkkala and off the Estonian coast there is 15–40 cm thick, very close ice.

     

    In the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland, 25–50 cm thick fast ice in the archipelago. Off the fast ice there is a 3-10 nautical miles wide lead covered with thin ice. Farther out, 20–40 cm thick, heavily ridged very close ice and in places areas of new ice. In the Bay of Vyborg, 40–60 cm thick fast ice. Off St. Petersburg, there is 30–65 cm thick fast ice to Tolbuhin. Farther out, 25–45 cm thick, very close ice to Vaindloo.

     

    Icebreakers: Kontio, Urho and Otso assist in the northern Bay of Bothnia and Fennica in the southern Bay of Bothnia. Voima and Zeus assist in the southern Sea of Bothnia and in the Archipelago Sea. Sisu assists in the western Gulf of Finland and Nordica in the eastern Gulf of Finland.

     

    Traffic restrictions: Minimum ice class and deadweight required of assisted vessels: Tornio, Kemi, Oulu, Raahe, Kokkola and Pietarsaari IA more than 4000 tons in deadweight, which have per port at least 2000 tons to load or unload or both together. Vaasa and Kaskinen IA of more than 2000 tons. Pori, Rauma and Uusikaupunki IA and IB of more than 2000 tons. Naantali, Turku, Hanko and Koverhar IA and IB of more than 2000 tons and IC of more than 3000 tons. Inkoo, Kantvik, Helsinki, Porvoo, Loviisa, Kotka and Hamina IA of more than 2000 tons.

     

    Vessels bound for ports in the Gulf of Bothnia shall report to ICE INFO on VHF Channel 65 when passing the Gotska Sandön lighthouse.

     

    The traffic separation schemes in the Sea of Åland and in the Gulf of Finland are temporarily out of use due to ice conditions.

     

    The traffic bound for the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland will partly be led through Porkkala along the 9 meter archipelago channel.

    SWEDISH ICE REPORT 2010-03-11

     

    BAY OF BOTHNIA:

    A 5-15 nautical miles wide lead run along the Swedish coast south of Piteå. The lead is narrowest past Bjuröklubb. From Malören to approx. 8 nautical miles northeast Norströmsgrund new ice and open water. Elsewhere 30-60 cm thick very close ice with numerous ridges.

    In southern Bay of Bothnia, a 5-10 nautical mile wide coastal lead from Bjuröklubb to the Quark. Further east 25-50 cm very close ice.

     

    THE QUARK:

    From Sydostbrotten to Nordvalen and east of Holmöarna mostly open water. Belts of open drift ice occur east of Holmögadd and outside Umeå. On the Finnish side, 20-40 cm very close ice.

     

    ÅNGERMANALVEN:

    Covered by fast ice, up to 50 cm.

     

    SEA OF BOTHNIA:

    Along the Swedish coast north of Söderhamn, an approx. 30 nautical mile wide area with mostly open water. Further east, close to very close ice with vast, heavily ridged floes. South of Söderhamn to Eggegrund, a 10-20 nauticla mile lead, further out 20-40 cm vast floes with ridges.

     

    SEA OF ÅLAND, ÅLAND ARCHIPELAGO:

    East of a line through Grundkallen – Svartklubben – Söderarm, open or very open ice, 10-25 cm. East of Märket and south of Åland, very close ice. In Åland archipelago, 15-35 cm fast or level ice.

                                      

    GULF OF FINLAND:

    Fast ice 25 – 50 cm to St Petersburg, in Vyborg Bay and along the Finnish coast. Outside the Finnish coast, a 7-20 nautical mile wide lead from Orrengrund to Bengtskär. Further south, mostly very close or level ice, up to 40 cm.

     

    GULF OF RIGA:

    In Moon Sound 20 – 40 cm and Parnu Bay 30 – 50 cm fast ice. Leads have opened in the northern and western parts of Gulf of Riga. At sea close or very close ice, 20 – 30 cm.

     

    NORTHERN AND CENTRAL BALTIC:

    In the Swedish archipelagos 10 – 40 cm fast ice. At sea approx. 20 nautical miles southeast of Svenska Högarna, an area of very close ice, up to 20 cm. West of a line through Bogskar – Kopparsten – Ölands northern cape, belts of open ice.

    In Kalmarsund south of Blå Jungfrun very close drift ice, up to 40 cm.

     

    LAKE MÄLAREN:

    Covered by up to 40 cm fast ice.

     

    LAKE VÄNERN:

    Level ice or close ice, 10 – 25 cm.

     

    KATTEGAT and SKAGERRAK:

    In the archipelagoes rapidly rottening fast ice, 20 – 40cm.
