The Finnish Transport Safety Agency has outsourced a significant part of its ship safety related duties to the classification societies, which it supervises. In 2007 the Finnish Maritime Administration, as it was called in those days, carried out 3,750 surveys and audits itself. Two hundred and one safety certificates, 94 ISM certificates and 74 ISPS certificates were issued. Eight maritime training centres were audited. In addition, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency issues 2,500 to 5,000 certificates of competency a year.
