Maintenance and development of vessel traffic service (VTS), ship reporting systems and traffic separation schemes. VTS is responsible for telematic systems and maritime safety communications along the Finnish coast.

It is also in charge of such duties pertaining to pilotage which according to the Pilotage Act (940/2003) and the Act on the State Pilotage Enterprise (938/2003) which are not the responsibility of the State Pilotage Enterprise (FinnPilot).

The Finnish Transport Agency takes an active part in international research and development projects in the field of vessel traffic management.
